Dependent children under 24 of active duty, retired, medically retired or deceased Soldiers (and some Reserve and Grey Area Retiree Soldiers) can get need-based scholarships for a first undergraduate degree or a technical certificate at an accredited college or trade school, for up to four years of full-time study. Award amounts vary each year with your FAFSA Student Aid Index and AER's budget, and you reapply every year. You need a 2.0 GPA and have to stay unmarried.

What you'll need to apply

  • AER online scholarship application, renewed every year
  • Financial information: Completed FAFSA Submission Summary (the award depends on your Student Aid Index)
  • Minimum GPA 2.0 (Cumulative on a 4.0 scale)
  • Proof of enrollment or acceptance: First undergraduate degree or technical certification at an accredited college or trade school (not a military service academy)
  • Dependent of an active duty, retired, medically retired or deceased Soldier listed in DEERS, under age 24 and unmarried for the whole academic year. Spouses apply to a separate AER program

The sponsor's page only listed some of what's needed, so this list may be missing items and the effort score may be higher than the real work. Requirements can change each cycle. Confirm them on the sponsor's page before you apply.
