Pell Grant recipients can get up to $5,000 to study or intern abroad for credit. The application is essays rather than recommendation letters, and your study abroad and financial aid advisors have to sign off. Programs have to be in places at Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2.

What you'll need to apply

  • Essay (about 1,167 words): Statement of Purpose
  • Essay (about 500 words): Building Mutual Understanding essay
  • Essay (about 500 words): Follow-on Service Project Proposal
  • Your study abroad advisor and financial aid advisor have to certify the application
  • Proof of enrollment or acceptance: Accepted into, or applying to, a credit-bearing study abroad or internship abroad program
  • Financial information: Receiving a Federal Pell Grant, or proof you will receive one during your program
  • No recommendation letters. Programs must be in a country or location at Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2. U.S. citizens only, and you can receive it once
