This public-speaking contest for students under 18 hands out over $150,000 a year: World Championship winners get $15,000, $10,000, or $5,000 for first through third, while district-level winners get $2,500, $1,500, or $1,000. You don't need club membership, just enter and compete through a local Optimist Club. Keep in mind this is a live spoken speech judged in person, not a written essay you submit online.

What you'll need to apply

  • Video: Speech on "How My Actions Strengthen Those Around Me"
  • Under age 19 on October 1 and not yet finished high school
  • Enter through a local Optimist Club, then district, regional and world rounds
