Separate from the national award, this state-level Horatio Alger program gives $10,000 to $20,000 to students in every state who've faced and overcome significant adversity and demonstrate financial need.

What you'll need to apply

  • Essay: Short responses including your Horatio Alger story and your American Dream experience
  • 1 recommendation letter: Support form from a non-relative adult over 21
  • Financial information: Tax returns, with critical financial need
  • Transcript: Official
  • Minimum GPA 2.0
  • High school senior
