Tennessee residents who graduate from an eligible Tennessee high school and enroll in an eligible Tennessee public or private college within 16 months can get up to $2,250 a semester as freshmen and sophomores and up to $2,850 as juniors and seniors at four-year schools. You qualify with a 21 ACT (1060 SAT) or a 3.0 GPA, and you apply by filing the FAFSA, with no separate application.

What you'll need to apply

  • Financial information: FAFSA each year (there is no separate state application), by the state deadline of September 1 for fall
  • SAT or ACT scores: 21 ACT or 1060 SAT, or a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale under the State Board of Education's Uniform Grading Policy, either one is enough (ACT superscores aren't accepted)
  • Proof of enrollment or acceptance: An eligible Tennessee public or private college within 16 months of high school graduation, in an associate or bachelor's program
  • Tennessee resident and graduate of an eligible Tennessee high school (home school, GED and HiSET graduates have separate rules). To renew you need a 2.75 GPA at 24 and 48 attempted hours and a 3.0 from 72 hours on, and eligibility ends after five years. The state lists $1,600 a semester at two-year schools without housing

Requirements can change each cycle. Confirm them on the sponsor's page before you apply.
